Painted to Perfection: The Drag Egg Register

Introducing 'Painted to Perfection: The Drag Egg Register,' a dynamic showcase capturing the essence of the Meanjin drag scene through the lens of makeup mastery. Inspired by the iconic clown egg registry, this project aims to celebrate the transformative artistry of drag performers while inviting viewers on a journey of evolution and excitement.

The Clown Egg Register, is a collection initiated by Stan Bult in 1947 with the establishment of "Clowns International ''. Published in 2017 by photographer Luke Stephenson, the register aims to identify and trademark clowns and their individual face paint through the unique painting of their eggs. This enduring tradition continues to captivate and inspire, serving as a testament to the rich history and artistry within the clown community.

The Clown Egg Register sparked a profound sense of joy and fascination within me from the moment I encountered it. Its obscurity and whimsical charm immediately resonated, igniting a desire to create a project that pays homage to its spirit. As someone grappling with health challenges while yearning to engage with the vibrant drag community, I saw this project as an opportunity to merge my passions for visual art and participation in drag culture.

This project holds immense relevance in the current socio-political landscape, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. In an era marked by global political turmoil and uncertainty, queer individuals continue to face significant challenges in terms of recognition, acceptance, and support within the arts and broader society. The project serves as a beacon of solidarity and empowerment, offering a platform for queer voices to be heard and celebrated.

Moreover, the project underscores the importance of preserving and honouring marginalised communities' histories and traditions. By drawing inspiration from the Clown Egg Register, we acknowledge the resilience and creativity of those who have come before us, while also carving out space for contemporary expressions of identity and belonging.

In essence, this project represents a convergence of tradition, artistry, and activism, inviting individuals to engage with and affirm the beauty and significance of queer culture in our shared world. As we navigate uncertain times, projects like these serve as reminders of the power of art to inspire change, foster connection, and uplift marginalised voices.

This project has been chosen and funded by Backbone Youth Arts, for their residency “On Display”. Over the course of 4 months (AUGUST- DECEMBER 2024) the display cabinet at Backbone will evolve into a vibrant testament to creativity and expression. Initially housing a select few completed pieces, the cabinet will gradually fill with the faces of Meanjin's drag community. Each week, two new Drag Egg Portraits will debut, enticing visitors to return and witness the collection's expansion firsthand.

By the project's culmination, 'Painted to Perfection' aims to present approximately 32 stunning Drag Egg Portraits, each a testament to the power of makeup and the vibrant spirit of Meanjin's drag scene. Join us on this transformative journey as we celebrate beauty, diversity, and the art of self-expression.
