Shani Finch
Shani Finch, an established multidisciplinary artist, made their debut in Meanjin/Brisbane in 2013. Finch (They/Them) is deeply intrigued by portraiture, often utilizing the self as a primary subject of exploration. Their artistic journey delves into themes of mental health, gender, sexuality, and their personal navigation through the complexities of the world.
An obsessive creator, Finch incessantly fills diaries, camera rolls, and Pinterest boards with an abundance of inspiration. Their artistic repertoire spans a wide spectrum, encompassing drawing, painting, wood burning, body painting, mural creation, digital illustration, poster design, and curation of numerous exhibitions in Brisbane.
Much akin to a bowerbird, Finch has an innate propensity for collecting various materials—ranging from trash to treasure to trinkets—that they ingeniously transform into captivating pieces of art. They seamlessly integrate makeup, fashion, and jewelry to adorn their body, incorporating these elements into their painting practice.
Blurring the boundaries between mediums, Finch uses paint brushes for makeup and makeup brushes for painting, highlighting their belief that life is synonymous with practice, and every task serves as an opportunity for artistic growth and expansion.
Through their diverse body of work, Finch invites viewers to engage in introspective conversations about the multifaceted nature of human existence and the intricate interplay of identity within society.
As Finch continues to evolve and refine their artistic practice, they remain committed to pushing boundaries, embracing new challenges, and cultivating a space for continuous learning and innovation.
